On a warm dry autumn evening, the companions of Stanley of Bickerstaff Chapter No 3511, which was consecrated on 12 October 1934. 20 chapter members and three guests attended the convocation to witness Karl Hughes a member of Aughton Lodge No 7996 being exalted into the Royal Arch and on this occasion the chapter was honoured by the presence of Assistant to the Provincial Grand Principals John Selley.
The chapter director of ceremonies, Frank Umbers, called the companions to order and the three principals – first principal Dave Southward, second principal Anthony Prior and third principal Peter Hoyles – opened the chapter in due form. The three principals then greeted John and the minutes were confirmed. A ballot to exalt Karl into the chapter was then held, which proved in favour of Karl.
The first assistant sojourner, Ian Clarke, then retired to prepare Karl. After Karl was presented, the exaltation ceremony was delivered most impressively by the three principals, assisted by Ian and principal sojourner Malcolm Sandywell.
John then congratulated Karl and gave him a letter from the group welcoming him to the Royal Arch, signed by himself and the Ormskirk and Bootle Group Vice Chairman, Malcolm Sandywell. John wished Karl the health to enjoy many happy years in the Royal Arch.
Alms were then collected, which raised £65. After the first rising, Frank formed a procession and John and Malcolm retired from the temple. After the risings were completed and the chapter was closed by the three principals, the companions retired to the festive board, where the raffle raised £105.
