West Lancashire Freemasons are proud to announce a grant of £30,816 to St Mary’s Hospice, Ulverston, one of a series of significant charitable investments the Province is making across the region in 2026, and a cause close to the hearts of many of our members. The funding will help to support vital end-of-life care for patients and families across the Furness and South Lakes area.

Situated at Ford Park Crescent, Ulverston, St Mary’s Hospice serves the communities of Furness and South Lakes, reaching patients and families between Millom, Grange-over-Sands, Walney and Ambleside. For anyone facing a life-limiting illness in this part of Cumbria, St Mary’s is far more than a building; it is a source of comfort, dignity and hope.
The hospice’s nine bed inpatient unit in Ulverston provides specialist palliative and end-of-life care around the clock, whilst its 365-days-a-year Hospice at Home service means that patients who wish to remain in familiar surroundings can receive expert clinical support, pain management and emotional care in the comfort of their own homes.
St Mary’s understands that serious illness affects the whole person and the whole family. Alongside its clinical services, the hospice offers a day hospice, a living well centre in Barrow-in-Furness, respite care, therapies, spiritual care and bereavement counselling. Its Compassionate Café and Bereavement Craft Club are free and open to anyone in the community who is experiencing loss. This breadth of support from pain management to a simple welcoming cup of tea, reflects the hospice’s deeply held belief that every person deserves to live well until the very end of life, with dignity, comfort and choice.
Running these services costs £6,000 every single day, a sum that St Mary’s relies upon its local community to help raise. West Lancashire Freemasons are proud to play their part in meeting that need and this grant of £30,816 represents a meaningful contribution to the hospice’s ability to continue delivering its life-changing work.
Charitable giving is at the heart of what West Lancashire Freemasons do. With around 6,500 members drawn from across a wide area, from the Manchester suburbs in the south to the Lake District in the north, the Province is committed to investing in the communities its members call home. Our lodges engage in a wide range of charitable activities throughout the year and our members take immense pride in making a tangible difference to the lives of those around them. The grant to St Mary’s Hospice reflects our core values of kindness, integrity and care for those in need, values that lie at the very heart of Freemasonry.
Alison Alger, spokesperson for St Mary’s Hospice, expressed her delight at the news stating that West Lancashire Freemasons have shown tremendous generosity and the hospice is truly grateful for their support. This grant will make a real difference to the patients and families we care for across the Furness and South Lakes.
Assistant Provincial Grand Master Peter Schofield said that the work St Mary’s Hospice does is simply extraordinary. Every day, their dedicated team bring skilled care, compassion and warmth to patients and families at the most difficult time of their lives. West Lancashire Freemasons are deeply honoured to be able to support that vital work and we hope that this grant will make a real and lasting difference to the people of Furness and South Lakes.
