Walton Chapter No 1086 installation convocation to install the three principals for the ensuing year was held in the Geoffrey Hirst Suite at Woolton Golf Club. First principal Barry Thornley opened the chapter in due form and completed all the domestic business of the chapter.
Provincial Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies Rob Fitzimmons entered the chapter and announced that Christopher Butterfield, Deputy Grand Superintendent, demanded admission. The companions were then upstanding to receive Christopher Butterfield accompanied by David Atkinson Mersey Valley Group Chairman and other distinguished companions. First Principal Barry Thornley rose with other principals and greeted Chris and offered him the sceptre which he returned.
At the start of the installation, the chapter DC Paul McLachlan presented David Moore who confirmed his solemn obligation as third principal and knelt while a portion of scripture was read by Paul Fryer. David was then conducted to a seat in the chapter. The DC collected Peter Casey who confirmed his solemn obligation as second principal and was seated while a portion of scripture was read by Chris Taplin. Peter was then conducted to a seat in the chapter. The DC then collected Alan Riley who confirmed his obligation as first principal and then knelt while a portion of scripture was read by Michael Daly.
The three principals were all installed into their respective chairs after being invested with the collar and robe of their office and entrusted with their sceptre. With the three principals being installed, the robe addresses were given by Barry Thornley, Alan Riley and Colin Graham. John Murphy carried out the address to the companions of the chapter and Christopher Butterfield congratulated everyone who took part in the ceremony.
With the business of the convocation complete, the companions retired to the festive board and in his response to the toast to his health, Christopher discussed how much he had enjoyed the ceremony, especially with junior companions doing the readings and how it is important to share the work. Also, if required we should be doing more multiple ceremonies. White table events are a way to recruit members into Royal Arch and encouraging members of light blue clubs to join.
Christopher then mentioned the Membership Challenge from London and how important recruitment and retention is, and if somebody wants to resign, find out why they want to leave. Membership numbers in the Royal Arch are still being maintained. Having Paul Brunskill present, who is the group’s visiting officer is a good idea as they are there to talk with members and make sure they are okay.
