Some evenings have a quality about them that is difficult to put into words but impossible to miss. The Southport Group Ball 2026 was one such occasion. After what felt like far too long an absence, the Ball made a very welcome return to the Masonic Hall on Duke Street, and from the moment the first guests arrived, it was clear that Southport’s Masonic community had been saving up its enthusiasm for exactly this kind of night.

Familiar faces filled the hall, old friendships were picked up mid-sentence as though no time had passed at all, and the room quickly settled into that particular warmth that only a gathering of genuinely good company can produce.
The evening was, above all else, a celebration of community, the strong, close-knit Masonic community that has long been a quiet cornerstone of life in Southport. Friendship, mutual support, and shared experiences are not merely words here; they were visible in every conversation, every handshake, and every burst of laughter that carried across the room throughout the evening.
No celebration of this kind succeeds without excellent food, and on this front, the evening more than delivered. The menu was prepared entirely in-house by the chef Phil, whose considerable skill in the kitchen and no small amount of effort produced a meal that drew praise from every table. It is one thing to feed a room well; it is quite another to make each course feel like a genuine part of the occasion rather than a pause between them. Chef Phil managed both.
The evening was further enhanced by the presence of the Provincial Grand Master Mark Matthews and his wife Debbie, and Assistant Provincial Grand Master David Thomas, whose attendance was warmly appreciated by all present and added a fitting sense of occasion to what was already a memorable night.
The verdict, from every corner of the room and in the days that followed, was unanimous: an outstanding evening, beautifully organised, thoroughly enjoyed, and a proud moment for Freemasonry in Southport. Plans for next year? One suspects they will not be short of willing attendees.
