61 brethren gathered at Barrow in Furness Masonic Hall for the installation ceremony at Hindpool Lodge No 1225, Barrow-in-Furness’ second oldest lodge, which has 150 years of history.

Gary Gibson, who has already been in the chair for two years, was proclaimed as WM for the ensuing year, prior to which secretary Derek Forrest informed all those present that the necessary dispensation had been received to enable Gary to continue for a third successive year.
Director of ceremonies Stephen Renney retired from the lodge for a short time after the completion of the regular lodge business. Upon his return, he announced that John Quiggin, representative of Provincial Grand Master Mark Matthews, requested admission. Accompanying John were grand officers Rowley Saunders, Alan Jones, Barry Fitzgerald and Gary Rogerson with Provincial Grand Steward Matthew Woods. Along with Furness and South Lakeland Group Chairman Chris Gray, vice chairman Harry Chatfield and group secretary Kevin Rigg.
There was much to admire in terms of ritual at the proclamation ceremony. One highlight was the presentation of the working tools of a master Mason by immediate past master Paul Musgrave. Work continued in the second degree, where the tools of a fellow craft Freemason were presented by secretary Derek Forrest. Peter While presented the tools of an entered apprentice Freemason.
Stephen Renney proclaimed Gary Gibson as WM of the lodge, who then proceeded to appoint and invest the officers of the lodge.
John Quiggin addressed the brethren in an exemplary fashion. As Gary reverted to the summons, John rose and brought the greetings of Provincial Grand Master Mark Matthews. He praised all the brethren who had taken part in the ceremony and Gary then presented John with a cheque for £1225 for the benefit of the West Lancashire Freemasons’ Charity.

A collection in the lodge room raised £127.69 and a raffle at the festive board a further £369. £14 was added to this from the traditional ‘masters’ swindle’. The meal of Cumberland sausage with mash and vegetables, followed by cheese and biscuits, was enjoyed by the assembled brethren. The celebrations continued into the late evening with all wishing Gary well for the ensuing year in the chair of King Solomon.
