The historic surroundings of St Helens Masonic Hall provided a fitting backdrop for a memorable evening as the companions of Ionic Chapter No 2405 gathered to install their three principals for the ensuing year. The chapter was opened promptly at 6:30pm by first principal Alan Haslem.

Alan presided with the business in his customary dignity and warmth. Second principal Paul Holden was unfortunately unable to attend and Chris Maloney ably assumed the role of acting second principal, supported by Ian Richards as third principal. Following the completion of the necessary chapter business, Provincial Deputy Grand Director of Robert Fitzsimmons announced that the Third Provincial Grand Principal Reverend Canon John Hall, stood without and demanded admission. Alan immediately responded that the chapter would be both pleased and honoured to receive him.
The distinguished guest was admitted in due form, accompanied by David Atkinson, Chairman of the Mersey Valley Group, and Provincial grand officers; Paul Brunskill, Dave Berrington, Andy Baxendale and John Pitches. Robert Fitzsimmons formally introduced the Third Provincial Grand Principal to the principals, who extended a warm and sincere welcome. In keeping with tradition, Alan offered his sceptre to John Hall with characteristic humility and good humour, John thanked him graciously, remarking that although he would have loved to accept and retain the sceptre, he felt it entirely appropriate for Alan to continue in possession of it on this occasion, a gesture that drew appreciative smiles around the chapter companions.

With the formalities concluded, the installation ceremony commenced in earnest with the chapter director of ceremonies David Rigby presenting third principal elect John Dawson to the principals. Although this was not John’s first time serving in the office, the solemnity of the occasion was undiminished. At Alan’s request, he knelt to reaffirm his obligation before receiving an inspiring and heartfelt reading from Jonathan Holden he then resumed his seat within the body of the chapter.
Alan next called upon David Hickman to assume the chair of third principal to facilitate the presentation of Ian Richards as first principal elect. David readily agreed, stepping into the role with enthusiasm and grace. Ian was then presented, and after reciting his obligation with clarity and conviction, he received the appropriate reading from Joshua Bottell before taking his seat.
At this stage, all companions below the rank of installed first principal’s retired and the chapter was declared a Conclave of Installed First Principals. In a ceremony both solemn and uplifting, Ian Richards was duly installed into the chair of first principal, taking on the responsibilities of first principal for the coming year. Although unable to be present, Paul Holden was formally proclaimed as second principal, ensuring continuity in the leadership of the chapter. John Dawson was then installed as third principal, completing the triumvirate of leadership that will guide the Ionic Chapter forward.
During the appointment and investment of officers for the upcoming year, David Rigby was appointed as the DC of the chapter. He received his wand from Provincial Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies Rob, who outlined Dave’s responsibilities in his role as DC of the chapter. Rob explained that when things go well, the praise goes to the principals. However, with a broad grin, he added that if things do not go as planned, the buck stops with the DC!

With the ceremony complete, Reverend Canon John rose to bring the greetings of the Grand Superintendent Mark Matthews. John said that if Mark been here, he would have congratulated everyone who had taken part in what was a terrific installation ceremony. John walked around the chapter, shaking the hands of everyone who had taken part.
Before he returned to his seat, first principal Ian Richards presented John with two charitable cheques, one for £200 to go to the Blood Bikers and £150 for the St Helens Masonic Hall, which was gladly received by John who thanked the chapter companions for their generosity.
With the chapter closed in harmony, the companions retired to enjoy a festive board filled with good fellowship, laughter and heartfelt congratulations. In his response to the toast to his health, Ian expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him and spoke of his commitment to supporting every companion and strengthening the bonds of friendship within the chapter.
The presence of the Third Provincial Grand Principal, Reverand Canon John Hall and distinguished guests, added particular significance to the evening, underscoring the vitality and spirit of Royal Arch Masonry in St Helens. It was a ceremony marked not only by tradition and dignity, but by warmth, camaraderie and optimism for the year ahead.
