“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” wrote Dickens, who could have been describing the weather at the start of the bi-annual motorcycle and scooter event which raises much needed funds for Alder Hey Hospital.

Organised by Geoff Bell of St Nicholas Lodge No 3620, the event which has been running for over 20 years, raises much needed funds for Alder Hey hospital, as well as easter eggs, chocolates, toys, clothes and cash donations.
Despite the rain and wind, a large contingent of well over 150, motorcycles, scooters, trikes and even a Robin Reliant, joined the ride out, all expertly supported by another charity organisation, ‘Bike Marshals’ who provide their service free of charge, with escort vehicles front and rear, and motorcycle outriders along the way, they sign post the route, keeping all the participants safe.
The procession set off from McDonalds in Liverpool, with a route taking in Edge Lane, Kensington, Old Swan, West Derby and finally to Queen’s Drive, where the cacophony of noise was welcomed by many passers-by braving the worst of the weather to show their support.
Riders made their way to the front entrance of the hospital and parking up bikes and scooters, were met by staff and patients who spent time talking with the riders and looking at all the machinery on display. The loading crates which were placed at the front entrance, made a focal point and were soon overflowing, full of chocolate, toys and presents, which would be gratefully received by patients and staff at the hospital.

Organiser Geoff, who was walking around with a collection bucket, reported that a total of £441.71 was raised on the day. A raffle was held at the Alder Club later that afternoon, which raised £55 and a very generous donation of £400 from the brethren of Cecil Lodge No 3274, brought the total to £896.71, an amazing sum of money given the poor weather.
With the next ride planned for before Christmas, there is still time to enjoy the sunnier weather before festooning bikes with tinsel and lights, and Christmas beckons to show support to Alder Hey and the next ride to support the important work that they do.
