Travellers Chapter No 4679 marked an exceptional moment in its history when Stephen Derringer, Provincial Grand Organist, was ceremonially conducted through all three Principals’ chairs, third principal, second principal and then first principal, during a single Royal Arch installation.

This form of progression, often described as an honorary or ‘virtual’ advancement, is seldom undertaken and reserved only for circumstances of particular merit or distinction. Its rarity added a palpable sense of occasion to an already memorable evening.
The chapter was honoured by the presence of Second Provincial Grand Principal Andrew Stephen Whittle, who presided over the proceedings. He was accompanied by an impressive retinue of grand officers and acting Provincial grand officers, whose attendance underscored the significance of the event and the high regard in which Stephen Derringer is held.

Stephen, well known across the Province for his musical contributions and his unwavering support of Royal Arch Masonry, approached each chair with humility and gratitude. The ceremonial progression through the offices was conducted with dignity and precision, reflecting both the chapter’s deep respect for tradition and its admiration for the companion being honoured.
Andrew Whittle offered warm congratulations on behalf of the Province, noting the dedication and service that had led to this unusual but richly deserved advancement. His words were echoed by the assembled officers and companions, who recognised in Stephen Derringer a steadfast contributor to the life of the chapter and the wider Royal Arch community.
The evening concluded in high spirits, with companions reflecting on a ceremony that combined rarity, reverence, and heartfelt appreciation. For Travellers Chapter companions, it was a night that will be remembered not only for its uniqueness, but for the celebration of a companion whose commitment continues to enrich the Royal Arch.
