Brethren of Carnarvon Lodge No 2376 enjoyed a memorable evening at Preston Masonic Hall as they gathered to celebrate a significant milestone, the 50th anniversary in Freemasonry of Robert ‘Bob’ Haydock PPGSuptWks.

The meeting was marked as a special occasion in the lodge summons, with the principal business of the evening dedicated to recognising Bob’s half century of service to the Craft. The lodge was honoured by the presence of Jonathan Heaton, Assistant Provincial Grand Master. The master of the lodge, Kieran Taylor-Bradshaw, invited Jonathan to take the chair to deliver a heartfelt account of Bob’s life and Masonic journey.
Reflecting on the occasion, Jonathan noted: “50 years in Freemasonry represents far more than the passing of time. It represents a lifetime of friendship, fellowship, charity and service.” Initiated into Carnarvon Lodge in March 1976, Bob has played an important and lasting role within the lodge. Installed as master of the lodge in 1990, during the lodge’s centenary year, he has also served for many years as charity steward and more recently as almoner, supporting the welfare of the brethren with care and dedication. His service to Freemasonry has also been recognised through Provincial honours.

What stood out throughout the evening was not just Bob’s service, but his character. His willingness to give time to mentor and support younger brethren has had a lasting impact on the lodge. Even in more recent years, as his mobility has reduced, he has remained a regular and valued presence. Brethren have ensured he can continue to attend meetings, and in typical fashion, Bob has always shown his appreciation with thoughtful gestures and generosity.
A key moment of the evening took place in the lodge room following Johnathan’s address, when Paul Wharton-Hardman, Vice Chairman of Chorley and Leyland Group and Past Provincial Grand Steward, presented Bob with his 50 years certificate on behalf of the Province, marking both his long service and the high regard in which he is held.
Following the meeting, brethren and guests retired to the festive board where celebrations continued in a warm and convivial atmosphere. Photographs of Bob’s acting career were passed round the room, along with stories of how great his singing voice was, as brethren remembered the many times he’d sang the Master’s Song at lodge installations locally, and around the Province.
A toast to the celebrant was delivered by Adam Dennett, the immediate past master. Adam reflected on Bob’s journey, his leadership, and the lasting impression he has made through his kindness, encouragement, and good humour.
The evening was a fitting tribute not only to Bob’s contribution to Freemasonry, but also to a life rich in family, friendship and community. The brethren were pleased to celebrate the occasion, with support from members of Bob’s family, especially his wife Eileen and two daughters Wendy and Angela, whose pride in his achievements was evident throughout. Bob’s daughter Angela shared with Jonathan: “I am so proud of my father, and we all love him dearly.” Carnarvon Lodge extends its warmest congratulations to Bob on reaching this remarkable milestone.
