There are occasions in the Masonic calendar that simply announce themselves. The 2026 Provincial Grand Lodge meeting was one of them, and Blackpool’s magnificent Winter Gardens, that grand dame of the north west’s great venues, rose to the occasion with customary splendour. More than 1,200 brethren and distinguished guests descended upon the town for a day that had ‘important occasion’ written all over it.

The warm welcome at the door from the excellent team of stewards provided by the Chorley and Leyland Group, under the direction of John Topping and Jeff Lucas, immediately made everyone feel at ease. Once directed to the robing rooms, brethren had the opportunity to enjoy refreshments and a brief period of relaxation before the main proceedings commenced.
Presiding over the meeting was the Provincial Grand Master Mark Matthews, whose warm and approachable manner once again set the tone for the day. The atmosphere throughout the Winter Gardens was one of excitement and pride, as attendees arrived to celebrate with those lodge brethren who were receiving first appointments or promotion to Provincial Grand Lodge.

As in previous years, significant emphasis was placed on encouraging and supporting the light blues, recognising the importance of engaging those brethren who are in the early stages of their Masonic journey. Their inclusion and visible presence throughout the day reflected the Province’s continued commitment to fostering enthusiasm, involvement and a sense of belonging amongst newer members.
As always, much preparation had taken place behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of the event. The Provincial Grand Secretary Peter Taylor, alongside Provincial Deputy Grand Secretary Mick Southern, together with the Provincial Office team and volunteers, once again coordinated the extensive logistics required for an occasion of this scale. Under the direction of the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies Barry Fitzgerald and his assembled team of present and past Provincial Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies, rehearsals and ceremonial arrangements were conducted with precision, ensuring the proceedings unfolded seamlessly throughout the day.

The formal procession into Provincial Grand Lodge was, as ever, one of the highlights of the occasion. Accompanied by music from Provincial Grand Organist Stephen Derringer, the entrance of the Provincial Grand Master, the Assistant Provincial Grand Masters of West Lancashire, the acting officers of Provincial Grand Lodge and distinguished guests from other Provinces was conducted with customary dignity and precision, creating an atmosphere entirely befitting the significance and splendour of the meeting.
As is customary, Provincial Grand Lodge was opened separately in an adjoining room before being called off, to permit the inclusion of the light blues within the procession once again provided a particularly memorable moment, allowing newer Masons to experience and participate in the pageantry of Provincial Grand Lodge, an occasion many undoubtedly felt privileged and honoured to enjoy. The way the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies and his team expertly guided and positioned all those taking part was a delight to observe, ensuring the proceedings unfolded seamlessly, particularly when considering the large number of participants involved.

Once all were assembled and seated, Provincial Grand Lodge was resumed and the proceedings continued. A principal feature of the day was the appointment and investiture of brethren within Provincial Grand Lodge. The investiture ceremony was conducted in two parts, beginning with those brethren receiving their first appointments, who were escorted to receive their honours from the Provincial Grand Master. Each was invested with his collar and received warm congratulations, assisted throughout by the Provincial Grand Stewards, resplendent in their distinctive regalia. Thereafter followed the promotions within Provincial Grand Lodge conducted in the same manner.
These honours recognise the dedication and service given by the recipients to their lodges, the Province, Freemasonry and the wider community. The ceremony itself was conducted with warmth, dignity and sincerity, with each brother receiving enthusiastic congratulations and heartfelt support from the assembled brethren, particularly those from his own lodge.

During his address to Provincial Grand Lodge, delivered before an audience of more than 1,200 brethren and distinguished guests, Provincial Grand Master Mark Matthews thanked those in attendance for their continued support of the Province and of the brethren receiving honours and promotions. He reflected upon the importance of friendship, enjoyment and active participation within Freemasonry, whilst also encouraging continued support for charitable work and community engagement throughout the Province. The Provincial Grand Master also acknowledged the considerable efforts of all those involved in organising the event, extending thanks to the Provincial Office team, the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies and his deputies, the stewards, volunteers and group representatives whose work contributed greatly to the success of the day.
Following the conclusion of Provincial Grand Lodge, brethren and guests gathered in the adjoining conference suite for the celebratory banquet, where more than 600 diners assembled to continue the festivities in an atmosphere of friendship and good humour. As is customary, a number of toasts were proposed during the evening. Provincial Junior Grand Warden, Paul Wharton-Hardman, had the honour of proposing the toast to the Grand Officers, which was warmly received by all present.

Assistant Provincial Grand Master Jonathan Heaton then delivered an excellent and well-received toast to those brethren who had received first appointments and promotions within Provincial Grand Lodge. In his remarks, Jonathan not only congratulated the recipients upon their honours, but also encouraged them to continue the dedication and service they have consistently shown to their lodges, Freemasonry in general and the wider community, sentiments which were met with enthusiastic applause.
Responding on behalf of the promoted brethren, Provincial Senior Grand Warden Alan Ledger offered a sincere and heartfelt reply, expressing gratitude for the honours bestowed and speaking warmly of the commitment that binds the Province together. It was the kind of speech that sends a room home happy. By any measure, the 2026 Provincial Grand Lodge meeting was a tremendous success, a day that showcased West Lancashire Freemasonry at its very best. Ceremony and companionship, tradition and warmth, dignity and good humour: all were present in abundance. For those who attended, it will linger as one of those days you simply felt glad to have been part of. For those who were not there, well, there is always next year.
