Bispham-with-Norbreck Lodge No 4731, the only daytime lodge in the North Fylde Group, enjoyed an enthralling lecture on the royals in Freemasonry, delivered by Sir Peter Roscow KLB, a past master of Mereside Lodge No 6360.

Peter enthralled the listeners with his talk on the royals in Freemasonry from the late 17th century to the early 18th century. Opening with the Great Fire of London in 1666, Peter then explored how the architects responsible for the city’s redesign were close associates of King Charles II and founding figures of the Royal Society, which was formed in 1660 to advance scientific understanding. The Royal Society counted among its members several prominent Freemasons including Sir Christopher Wren, Sir Isaac Newton and General Sir Robert Moray.
Sir Peter traced the growing relationship between the monarchy and the Craft, noting that Frederick, Prince of Wales, was initiated in 1737. Royal involvement brought respectability and protection to Freemasonry, attracting high ranking individuals and helping to shape the organisation’s early development. Many royal Freemasons went on to hold leadership roles, influencing the Craft’s direction during its formative years.
Delivered with clarity, humour and deep historical insight, Sir Peter’s presentation brought early royal patrons vividly to life. His engaging style made the subject accessible and enjoyable, leaving the brethren of the lodge both informed and delighted after listening to such an interesting lecture.
Following the lecture, master of the lodge Martin Clements closed the lodge and members retired to the festive board. The meeting was held as an ‘Old English Night’, although in this instance, an ‘Old English Morning’. 11 members and 11 visitors enjoyed the entertainment with fines and a Chorley auction together raising an excellent £171.20 for good causes.
The lodge was also pleased to welcome a potential new member, Past Assistant Provincial Grand Master of the Province of Cheshire, George Mann, who responded on behalf of the visitors. George expressed his pleasure at attending the meeting and shared a little insight of his Masonic journey.
