Braving freezing temperatures, members of Leyland St Andrew’s Lodge No 7391 took part in the Great Tommy Sleep Out, swapping warm beds for sleeping bags to raise vital funds for homeless veterans. Facing a long, uncomfortable night under the stars, they endured just a fraction of what 1,000s of ex-service personnel experience every day. But this was about more than just raising money, it was a statement of solidarity. Those who once served their country should never be left to sleep rough, struggling with PTSD, financial hardship and a system that too often forgets about them.

Thanks to incredible support from donors and sponsors, the lodge has already raised over £1,300, with more contributions still coming in. Every penny will go towards helping veterans rebuild their lives and find the security they deserve. A special thanks goes to the brethren of Old Huttonian Lodge No 7614 for their generous £300 donation and Eccleston Lodge No 7754 brethren for contributing £100. But the mission doesn’t stop here. Donations remain open, ensuring even more veterans receive the help they need.
Paul Wharton-Hardman, Leyland St Andrew’s Lodge secretary, reflected on the event sharing: “It was a tough night, but nothing compared to what so many veterans go through daily. We wanted to do our part, not just to raise funds but to raise awareness. The response has been incredible, and we’re so grateful for the generosity shown.”
This event is just the latest in the lodge’s ongoing commitment to charity. Over the past 12 months, they have donated more than £2,500 to causes including local foodbanks aiding struggling families, homeless youth charities helping young people off the streets and children’s charities providing vital care and opportunities. Freemasonry is built on fraternity, integrity and charity, and the Great Tommy Sleep Out was a testament to those values in action.
Despite the cold, the Masonic spirit kept morale high. Special thanks go to Dave Bishop, Leyland St Andrew’s Lodge director or ceremonies, who not only hosted the event but also prepared a steaming homemade chilli to keep the team fuelled through the night. And while alcohol might not be the recommended way to stay warm, a cheeky sip or two certainly helped take the edge off!
