Phoenix Lodge of Installed Masters No 9206 hosted a memorable gathering at Brookfield Hall, Westhoughton. The highlight of the evening was the esteemed visit from several brethren of Lodge St James No 171, meeting in Doune, Perthshire, who came to present a captivating demonstration of a second degree ceremony of Scottish ritual.
The lodge was initially opened to the second degree by the master of the lodge Nigel Monks before being ‘called off’. This set the stage for the officers of Lodge St James to step in and perform the unique Scottish ceremony. For those who haven’t yet experienced a Scottish ritual, it is a must-see event; the distinct style and tradition offer a refreshing perspective on Masonic proceedings.
After the impressive demonstration, the WM expressed heartfelt gratitude to the brethren who’d travelled all the way from Perthshire. He praised their ‘exceptional ritual,’ a sentiment echoed by all present with enthusiastic applause. Jim Dawson, the WM of Lodge St James, responded graciously, acknowledging it as a ‘privilege and an honour’ for their ‘small country lodge in Perthshire’ to present the second degree to the Phoenix Lodge of Installed Masters members and visitors.
With the Phoenix officers resuming their positions, the master of the lodge Nigel Monks ‘called on’ and ceremonially closed the second degree, returning to the first degree. After all the lodge business was completed, the lodge was closed and the brethren retired to the dining room for the festive board.
The toast to the grand officers was proposed by acting senior warden Derek Robinson, which Stewart Seddon responded to, further toasting the Scottish brethren. Acting junior warden Antony Price honoured the Provincial grand officers with a toast. The raffle was a success, raising £303, with both prizes won by the visiting brethren from Scotland!
A generous donation of a £100 cheque was presented by Nigel Monks from Phoenix Lodge of Installed Masters to the Evelyn McFarland Brain Tumour Trust. Jim Dawson shared a touching story of two Lodge St James members affected by brain tumours, underscoring the importance of the donation and how close it was to their members.
Before ending the festive board, WM Nigel thanked the Brookfield Hall staff for their patience and professionalism, noting the high quality of their service despite a late dining start. In his final message he wished everyone a safe journey home, especially the esteemed visitors.
This event not only showcased the rich diversity of Masonic rituals, but also highlighted the camaraderie and mutual respect among brethren across regions. You have to be a master of a lodge to join Phoenix Lodge of Installed Masters, but all brethren are welcome to visit.
