More than 1,000 walkers took to the streets for St Catherine’s Hospice’s annual ‘Moonlight and Memories’ Walk in June 2024. Take on this poignant evening walk in memory of your loved ones, while raising much-needed funds for our charity.
The 6-mile or 8-mile challenges both start at 8pm, (you can choose which route to take part in on the night). On returning to St Catherine’s, walkers will be presented with a medal and treated to a delicious hot sandwich from The Mill to celebrate your incredible achievement.
In support of the charity’s event, Freemasons from Chorley and Leyland Masonic Group were called upon to help and along with family and friends, gave up their evening to volunteer for the event, which is expected to raise more than £60,000..
Ensuring the evening was incident free, 14 marshal points lined the route, each with at least two volunteers tasked with directing the walkers to crossroads safely, use footpaths and make sure nobody got lost. Walkers ranged from fast ‘speed walkers’ to those more relaxed walkers bringing up the rear, who may have stopped off for refreshment along the way. The marshals were ably assisted by members of the Widows Sons Masonic Bikers Association, who were able to quickly move between points when additional help was needed.
Each of the walkers had their own special reasons for taking part, with many walking in memory of loved ones who had spent their final days under the care of St Catherine’s Hospice. Local people came out of their homes to cheer the walkers along and everyone involved returned to The Mill Café at St Catherine’s for breakfast sandwiches.
It was a true community event thoroughly enjoyed by everyone taking part, including the marshals, and it was a fine example of how volunteering is an important part of our Masonic charitable activities, in addition to our monetary donations. Indeed, the MCF has made a number of large donations to St Catherine’s, a reminder of how local charities benefit as a direct result of our fundraising during the West Lancashire Province Festival.
