A key part of Freemasonry has always been looking after the widows, families and close friends of its members. Today’s lodge members never forget the loved ones of Masons who have sadly departed and those in need are a friend indeed.
This was demonstrated most superbly by the brethren of Southport Emulation Lodge No 3675 who provided a card and a visit to Mabel Lavelle on the occasion of her 100th birthday. Mabel was born in March 1924. Given her age Mabel’s association with Southport Emulation Lodge predates today’s membership but that does not stop them looking out for her. She has moved into a new nursing home in Southport after a fall last year and her daughter Vicky came up to Southport to organise the move and mark the milestone with her.
Dave Rimmer, a long-standing member of Southport Emulation Lodge, has been quietly and without fuss making a difference behind the scenes for many years now. Having already served in many offices he selflessly offered to help out as almoner following the illness of another member and has thrown himself into the role with his customary patience and quiet hard work.
Following on the dedicated record keeping of his predecessors, he became aware of Mabel’s milestone and was extremely keen the lodge members marked the occasion and used the opportunity to remind Mabel they still cared. He therefore organised a card which was signed with great enthusiasm by members of all ages and arranged a visit to the nursing home to present the card, wish Mabel well, and check if there was anything else the brethren could do to help. This was most appreciated by both Mabel and her daughter who were all smiles on this very special day.
Masonry is about taking a good man and making him better, with the actions of older brethren like Dave and his predecessor being shining examples to their younger brethren of exactly what this means. Southport Emulation Lodge brethren wish Mabel every happiness and will continue to look out for both her, and other the widows and family members associated with the lodge, regardless of current membership.
