Garston Masonic Hall was the venue for a joint Ladies Night between Harthill Lodge No 8443 and Excelsior Lodge No 3580 to raise funds for a charity, Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission, that Jim Corcoran supports. Jim is a member of both lodges,
During the evening, a cheque was presented to Professor Paul May by the WM Adam McGee of Excelsior Lodge for £1,100 towards the Brain Cancer Mission and a cheque for £1,000 to Bio Blastoma Cancer Charity from Graeme Jones, the WM of Harthill Lodge
Jim Corcoran and David Atkinson, Chairman of the Mersey Valley Group, visited the Walton Centre in Liverpool to present cheques to Michael Jenkinson; one cheque was for £200 from Liverpool Dramatic Chapter No 1609.The second cheque was a joint amount of a £1,000, £800 from Jim and £200 from Malcolm Youds who had a brain tumour successfully removed by Michael.
The neuro-oncology community of healthcare professions have recognized the need to develop materials and resources to help patients and families and carers during the treatment of brain cancer. At present this is delivered by clinical teams, often specialist nurses, but through this project the aim is to empower patients, carers and families.
There is currently a gap in the care that can be delivered during treatment, particularly when patients become more unwell or affected speech and language difficulties, mobility changes and neurological problems such as changes in personality. Providing support and care in a kind, person-cantered way, to maintain the best possible quality of life for as long as possible, it is therefore crucial for all those involved in caring for a loved one.
The Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission will coordinate this national project in collaboration with the Walton Centre with Professor Michael Jenkinson Neurosurgeon and Clatterbridge Cancer Centre with Dr Chloe May Consultant Clinical Oncologist. All healthcare professions working on this project are doing it on a voluntary basis.
The project is national and will be rolled out to all hospitals and clinical teams looking after brain cancer patients the project will take twelve months to deliver. Jim Corcoran’s fundraising is vital to support this initiative that will help countless patients and families in the future
