From the moment guests stepped through the doors of Bolton Wanderers Toughsheet Community Stadium, the 165th Provincial Grand Ball and Banquet promised to be an evening unlike any other. The sight that greeted them was nothing short of breathtaking, West Lancashire Freemasons gathered in their 100s, resplendent in Craft and Royal Arch regalia, filling the venue with a magnificent blaze of colour and ceremony.

The Provincial Grand Master and Grand Superintendent Mark Matthews was visibly moved by the extraordinary turnout from across the Province. He was particularly delighted by the remarkable number of white ribbon companions and master Masons who had come out in such force, a heartening testament to the continued growth and vitality of both Craft and Royal Arch Masonry in West Lancashire.
Mark and his wife Debbie welcomed their guests with the warmth and grace that has made the evening so cherished. The Provincial Grand Ball is, without question, the jewel of the Masonic social calendar, a glittering occasion that brings together members and their partners from every corner of the Province for an evening of elegance, fellowship, and celebration. One of the rare and special occasions on which full regalia may be worn at the table. The ballroom came alive with pageantry and splendour, the rich colours of ceremonial dress complemented beautifully by the ladies in their finest evening wear. With a proud and unbroken history stretching back more than 165 years, it remains the most spectacular event in the Masonic year.

Before the formalities began, Mark invited all installed masters and first principals to join him and Debbie for pre-dinner drinks, a reception that buzzed with excitement and warm conversation. For many newly installed masters and first principals, it was a treasured opportunity to meet the Provincial Grand Master in person, and the relaxed, friendly atmosphere put everyone instantly at ease. Laughter rang out freely, partnerships were strengthened, and Mark spoke with infectious enthusiasm about the growing interest in Royal Arch Masonry, radiating confidence that its future in West Lancashire is not merely secure, but bright with promise.
Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies Barry Fitzgerald then led the formal proceedings with his customary assurance, as Mark and Debbie made their entrance into the ballroom to warm and enthusiastic applause. They were accompanied by Deputy Provincial Grand Master Frank Umbers and his partner Catherine, Deputy Provincial Grand Superintendent David Barr and Helen, Provincial Senior Grand Warden John Reynolds and Deborah, and Provincial Junior Grand Warden Ezra McGowen and his wife Jamie, a procession that perfectly captured the dignity and fellowship of the occasion.

John Reynolds took to the stage to open the ball with an address that drew laughter and applause in equal measure, capturing the spirit of the evening with wit, warmth, and just a touch of mischief. To read John’s opening address in full, please ![]()
The dinner that followed was a triumph. The room hummed with animated conversation as guests savoured an excellent meal, old friendships were joyfully rekindled, and new bonds were forged, all beneath the stunning canopy of ceremonial regalia worn with evident pride.
Then came the moment so many had been waiting for, the Grand March. Led by Mark and Debbie, alongside senior members of the Province, couples took to the floor and processed gracefully arm in arm around the ballroom, continuing a tradition that West Lancashire Freemasons have proudly upheld for 164 years. It is, as ever, a truly unforgettable sight.
The evening’s seamless flow owed much to the calm, meticulous direction of Barry Fitzgerald, whose quiet dedication behind the scenes ensured every moment landed exactly as it should.

As the band Harlequin struck up, the atmosphere soared. The dance floor filled in moments, and from that point the evening belonged entirely to the music, the laughter, and the joy of shared company. Conversations flowed, friendships deepened, and the celebrations continued long into the night in the very finest spirit of Freemasonry.
From the first toast to the final dance, the 165th Provincial Grand Ball and Banquet was a glorious celebration of everything this great tradition stands for: warmth, fellowship, elegance, and joy. Truly grand in every sense of the word, it was a night that will linger in the memory long after the last note faded, and a shining reminder of why this beloved tradition has endured for so many generations, and will, we trust, continue to do so for many more.
