King David Lodge strikes gold

King David Lodge No 7256 has achieved Gold status following its latest donation to the 2010 Festival.

Deputy Provincial Grand Master Brian Gillbanks was presented with a cheque for £1,000 when he attended the Wellington Group lodge’s installation meeting. He then presented the new WM, Russell Start, with the special Gold certificate.

More than 90 brethren attended the meeting when the installing master was William Boyd-Tennent.

The meeting took place at the Hall Annexe of Childwall Synagogue. The meetings are held in the multi-use venue and the whole of the lodge has to be set up for each meeting by members of the lodge led by DC Malcolm Povio. It is a “Kosher” lodge which refers to the catering and enables Orthodox Jewish brethren to fully join in the festive board. The new WM and many members are not of the Jewish faith.

Wellington golfers experience 30th degree

Brethren and guests met in 31 degrees Celsius to compete in the 29th annual competition of the Liverpool Wellington Group Golf Society.

The day, as well as being the hottest of the year, marked the society’s first visit to the Lee Park Golf Club and the organisers were to be commended for finding a course in such magnificent condition.

The golf was followed by dinner, after which, Stanley Oldfield the Society President and Assistant Provincial Grand Master, presented the various prizes.

Joe McCarron of Blenheim Lodge won the Individual Trophy while David Ford from the Woolton Lodge of Unity was presented with the Visitors’ Prize. Blenheim Lodge No 7519 carried off the President’s Cup for the team event.

However, the main winners were the charities as £545 was raised from a raffle and Dutch auction.

The Group Golf Chairman, John Lewis, in proposing the toast to Lee Park Golf Club, congratulated the club on the excellent condition of the course and on the superb quality of the cuisine.

The evening concluded with the Liverpool Wellington Group Chairman, John Roberts, thanking the golf society chairman, secretary, and the treasurer for organising another most successful tournament.

17 join sponsored walk

This year’s Wellington Group sponsored three-mile walk took in some of the historical sites around the city, proving most interesting to those Brethren and their friends who took part. The weather was good with everyone being returned back to the safety of the hall before the weather deteriorated and the rain set in.

First out of the starting blocks was Jim Hurst (Neptune Lodge 1264) who ran the three-mile course in 35 minutes.

A total of 17 walkers set off, with all being offered a free raffle ticket and light refreshments on completion of their walk, some even took advantage of the free  ‘Asbach Uralt Brandy’ in their coffee.

Group Ladies’ Luncheon Dinner

A musical extravaganza performed by ‘Just Midnight’, a mixed choir, was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone at the Wellington Group Ladies’ Luncheon Club dinner held at the Liverpool Masonic Hall. As usual the tables were set to the highest standard, with everyone enjoying a splendid meal in excellent company.

Many lodges within the group had invited and taken along some of the widows of their respective Lodges. A special “thank you” went to the staff and friends of Tithebarn for organising transport and supporting the 14 residents who attended. Their presence certainly made the evening that much more pleasing.

The prize table for the raffle was overflowing with an array of nice items, allowing almost every lady to go home with a prize.
