Liverpool Epworth Lodge No 5381 in the Lake District

A number of brethren from the Liverpool Epworth Lodge No 5381, part of the Liverpool Sandon Group, and their partners travelled north to the Lake District for a weekend of “Highland Hospitality” organised by Heversham Lodge No 8396, at The Windermere Hydro Hotel, Bowness.

This was a weekend to meet friends both old and new for the members of Liverpool Epworth, as their Immediate Past Master WBro Brian Ferrington is also the IPM of Heversham Lodge, after being given special dispensation last year to hold office as WM of both lodges simultaneously.

Although the event covered most of the weekend, the highlight was Saturday evening, with many Brethren, including those who had travelled south from Scotland, looking resplendent in full traditional Highland costume. The menu reflected the theme, with all enjoying sumpious fayre starting with a rillette of Scottish salmon, a main course of “Supreme of Chicken Rosslyn” accompanied by the Great Chieftain o’ the Puddin Race, and followed by Raspberry Cranachan.

A pair of pipers had led in the haggis prior to the meal, and one of these, WBro Richard Cowie of Heversham Lodge gave a splendid address, the like of which you would need to travel far and wide in the hope, if possible, of finding better. The evening consisted of a wide variety of entertainment, including music by the Clan Johnston Ceilidh Band and traditional Highland dancing, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

During the course of the evening a raffle took place for the Masonic Charities, with the brethren being most generous.

Craig is WM of Commercial Travellers

The brethren of Commercial Travellers’ Lodge No 2631, whose warrant was issued in 1896, saw Bro Craig Hunter installed as WM at their installation meeting at Liverpool Masonic Hall. The lodge, a member of the Liverpool Sandon Group, was delighted and honoured to receive Assistant Provincial Grand Master Stanley Oldfield as their principal guest. He was accompanied by three Sandon Group officials, John Wreyford (chairman), David Anderton (vice chairman) and Andrew Whittle (secretary). The brethren present witnessed a very good and enjoyable ceremony as Bro Craig Hunter was installed as WM. Peter pays tribute to Ian

The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, Peter Hosker, has paid tribute to the work of Ian Gee during his time as Provincial Grand Scribe Nehemiah.

Peter was the principal guest at the meeting of the Chapter of Friendship No 241 when Liverpool Sandon Group Secretary Andy Whittle was installed as First Principal.

The Chapter of Friendship has a long and distinguished pedigree, the Charter being issued on New Years’ Day 1861, with the first meeting held on 6 February. The installation meeting was held at Liverpool Masonic Hall and the Chapter was further honoured at the meeting by the presence of the Deputy Grand Superintendent Steven Reid and a number of Acting Provincial Grand Officers. They witnessed an impressive ceremony as EComp Andy Whittle was installed as MEZ of the Chapter, EComp Kevin Dempster, as H and EComp Clifford Hughes as J.  As expected, the installation ceremony and festive board were extremely well attended and all present had a very interesting and enjoyable evening.

During the meeting Ian Gee,  who was appointed to the high rank of Provincial Grand Scribe Nehemiah of West Lancashire in April was invested as the new Director of Ceremonies of the Chapter of Friendship.

Peter was very pleased to receive a donation of £818 from the Chapter towards the 2010 Festival. This latest donation brought the giving of the Chapter to Grand Patron status and Peter said how pleasing it was to see the Chapter achieve this level of charitable donation, taking into consideration that all the Companions have already given through their Craft Lodges.

More help for cadets

Sandon Group Secretary Andy Whittle had the pleasure to pay a follow up visit to the St Helens Sea Cadet Unit TS Scimitar to present them with a further three cheques to assist them in continuing their good work with young people.

Following an earlier presentation of £2,000 from the West Lancashire Freemasons’ Charity and the Sandon Group, which was reported at a group meeting, two lodges and a private Brother decided that they would also like to make donations to the unit. Cecil Lodge No 3274 gave a donation of £500 and Anfield Lodge No 2215 gave a donation of £150. There was a further donation of £25 from a Brother making a total of £675. These donations mean that the total now given to the unit is £2,675.

Ray McKenna the unit chairman on behalf of the management committee and staff at TS Scimitar stated that they are extremely grateful for the kind donations that have been made by the Freemasons.

CASH HELP FOR SEA CADETS

Donations totalling £2,000 have enabled a Sea Cadet unit remain open.

Sandon Group Chairman John Wreyford accompanied by the group secretary Whittle went to the St Helens Sea Cadet Unit TS Scimitar to present them with two cheques to cover the cost of an electrical safety audit.  The audit was required in order for the unit to remain open and continue with its important work with young people. The Sea Cadets is a registered charity and each unit relies heavily on fund-raising and donations for its continued existence.

The Sandon Group helped the unit to apply for a grant from the West Lancashire Freemasons’ Charity which gave a donation of £1,500. The Sandon Group added a further £500 from its funds to bring the total donation to £2,000.
